My name is Doogie.  Not Doogie Houser, MD, don’t even go there.  Nope, just Doogie, that’s me. Last I checked they don’t let dogs into medical school, although it might not be a bad idea.  I do have a masters degree in being wonderful though.  I was found as a stray and my family never came looking for me.  The folks at the pound thought I was pretty swell, so the put a shout out to the volunteers at Friends, and the rest is history.  Here I am ready to find a new home of my own.  I’ve hung around other dogs and always get along well with them.  I’m learning how to walk like a good boy on the leash, so if I pull a little, just show me what to do.  If you’re willing to spend some time with me and show me the ropes,  I know I’ll catch on fast.

Dugal was surrendered by his owner to a county shelter.  When he was out of time, a volunteer saved him and brought him to Friends of Homeless Animals.  Dugal is a happy boy who likes other dogs and loves people.  He may seem a little shy at first, but warms up quickly.  He is medium-energy and loves to go for walks.  Unfortunately, he hasn’t had any leash training, and will need someone who is willing to work with him.  Dugal loves to have your attention and will jump on you to get it…and he can jump chest high.  He would do best in a home with no young children and would benefit greatly from training.

Era was found wondering the streets of Abingdon County. She was brought to the local shelter and waited patiently for her owner to show up. They never did and she was scheduled to be euthanized. One of their volunteers contacted us to see if we could take her before it was too late. Luckily Friends had room and here she is! Era is affectionate little girl. She is energetic, seems clean in her cage and doesn’t appear to be a chewer at the shelter. She would most likely do best in an active household.

I’m a fluffy, adorable guy named Eros.  I seemed to have gotten a bad rap lately because the kennel stress is getting to me.  See, some dogs handle it better than others, and I’m one obviously one of the “others”.   I’ve never really been a big fan of other dogs, we tolerate and respect each other, but that’s usually as far as it goes.  Lately though, I’ve just been very edgy.  If you would just spend enough time with me you’ll know.  You’ll know what taking me for a walk and spending some special quality time with me does.  You’ll see what a difference it makes if you just be patient and understanding with me, and please, just help me.  All I need is help, but I need your help, because I can’t help myself, see?  I just need help, that’s all.  Please help me.

Special needs:      Sometimes has seizures, so would do best in a quiet home without other pets or kids

Fly is extremely intelligent and eager to please.  She was adopted and returned 4 years later because she began having seizures about once a month.  They were expecting a second child, and were concerned about Fly's behavior during the seizures, so they thought that it would be best to return her. Fly is an extremely smart little girl, and knows many tricks (sit, down, shake, roll over, stay and up). She is also housebroken, loves riding in the car, is very playful, likes new people, is NOT a chewer, and is crate trained.  I'm in foster care, so please ask to meet me.

Hi!  I am an SFF (Single Furry Female) in search of YOU!  I love to prance at my foster mom's side on our daily walks, and to snuggle up with her on our sofa each night.  My personal habits are impeccable . . .  I get along very well with my 2 kitty-siblings and my adult human buddies (some children frighten me a bit) . . .  and I enjoy car rides, watching others garden, and romping with my BFFs,  Ben and Luna.  I have a few years (about 15, if you're counting) under my collar and my vision is not perfect, but I am as energetic and oh-so-sweet and cuddly as a puppy -- everyonewho meets me tells me so!  And, I almost have my full 8-pack back (I had been starved before the folks at FOHA rescued me), so if you would like to set up a play-date, just give a howl!   I'm in foster care, so please ask to meet me.

Gamby was given up by his owners. They had gotten him as a puppy and he probably grew a little too big. According to the owners he was good with children and liked other dogs. They also said that he was housebroken. Gamby is still a big pup. If given the chance he will probably chew a couple of shoes. He’s a wonderful boy who will need some training when it comes to walking on a leash. He most likely do wonderful with an active family. Somebody who is into running/hiking would probably do best for Gamby.

My name is Zoey and that's my best friend Garth.  I am a 6 year old purebred White German Shepherd and so is my buddy here who is 8.  We were rescued by a loving and  kind lady who is now looking to find us a home together if possible.  We have spent a lot of time together and really LOVE each other.   We are both housebroken, walk nicely on a harness, update on all our shots and have been spayed and neutered.

While I love to romp around and play,  my buddy Garth loves to relax and is a tad bit shy.  I do get sick on car rides so I would love to stay home and relax.   Our foster mum says we are just the sweetest doggies.  She does not understand why we haven't found homes as yet.

Garth and Zoey are courtesy listings and are not at FOHA.  For more information about adopting these dogs, e-mail umamjay@gmail.com

Are you scouting for a new dog? How about two? My mom Genie and I had to go back to FOHA when our owner was no longer able to care for us. She was very loving and affectionate, so my mom and I are the nicest, most gentle dogs you'll ever meet. We're a little shy when you first meet us but you'll soon discover our wonderful manners and sweet personalities. I've never lived without my mom so we need to be adopted together. She's the cute little beagle and I'm the bigger fellow next to her. With my golden fur and dark eyes, my foster family thinks I look like a little bear. We love to go for walks and will sit quietly next to you while you watch TV or work on the computer. We love other dogs, as long as they are gentle, and also do very well with children. Our foster family thinks we are just about perfect!! So come visit us and help us find our forever home!  We are in foster care, so please ask to meet us.

Gilmore and another dog were given up by their owner because they could no longer take care of them. They had Gilmore since he was a puppy and had obviously never taken the time to train him. They probably played a lot with his mouth when he was a puppy, and therefore he became mouthy. The shelter that he came from scheduled to euthanize him because they didn’t have the people/time to work with him. Fortunately Friends was contacted to see if we could take this wonderful boy;-) Gilmore is a very nice medium energy dog. He knows “sit” and is working on down and roll-over. Even though he’s mouthy, he’s extremely attentive! He’s very food motivated, and takes his treats ever so gently. His attentions span is fantastic and it will just take a little persistence to make him the “perfect” dog;-). His previous owner would crate him while they were not home. They said that he would do well with strangers coming into the house and that his best quality was his playfulness. According to them he did bark when he was left alone. Because he’s still mouthy, we don’t recommend him to a family with young children at this time.

Special needs:      Needs someone who is experienced with dogs

My name is Goldie, can you guess why?  Could it be because of my golden coat?   I'm an extra-special girl because I was rescued from Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina.  It is amazing that I made it through that experience, and I am very grateful to Friends for making sure that I have a safe place to stay until I find my forever home.  I’m a very playful and energetic girl who is also really smart.  I already know commands like “sit”, “stay”, and “heel”!  I’m already housetrained and love to be brushed.  I will love my family, but I’m a bit wary of strangers.  I’d thrive in a home where I could get plenty of exercise and know that my person is the leader of the pack.  It would sure take the burden off of me to have to watch out for everything.  Man, it’s too much for a dog sometimes, I tell you!  Also, I respond much better to positive reinforcement and want only to have all the faith in the world in my new family.

I may look tough on the outside, but I’m just a big marshmallow inside with a heart of gold.  I was found in the Target parking lot and picked up by animal control.  Although my previous owners spend lots of money purchasing me, they weren’t willing to pay the money to get me out of the pound.  FOHA came to my rescue, and here I am!  I walk very nicely on the leash and I’m always a very gentle boy.  I love treats and will suck them right out of your hand without ever even using my teeth.  I love belly rubs, and I love to chase balls.  I’m not a Retriever though, so don’t expect me to bring them back.  I’m a big lug of a guy with a soft spot for everyone, especially my new family.

Special needs:      Needs to stay calm for 3 months until her paw completely heals

Gypsy Rose is a beautiful Black Lab mix who is grateful to be alive.  She found herself with a rescue group, and was adopted to a seemingly loving family.  She was with them for one month, during which time she injured her paw, and they never got it treated.  The family had two dogs... one who was friendly and got along fine with Gypsy, and another who had neurological issues, and didn't get along with Gypsy.  Because Gypsy wasn't doing well with the one dog, the family dug out of the snow during this past winter's big blizzard, and drove Gypsy to the vet to be put down.  Gypsy was only 2 years old and was so sweet and friendly, so the vet couldn't bring herself to put down this wonderful girl.  Her paw was in pretty bad shape at this point, so someone had to step up and offer to pay for surgery to repair the deep laceration.  When no other groups offered to help (including the one Gypsy was originally rescued from), Friends said we would help her.  We found Gypsy a great foster home, who has been keeping her calm and tending to her injured paw.  Gypsy is making fantastic progress, and will be as good as new by the end of August.  Gypsy is hoping to be adopted to a great home that will continue to give her the care she needs while her paw heals.  Not only will Gypsy be thrilled to have her forever home, but it will make her current foster available to help other dogs with special needs.  Gypsy should probably go to a home without other pets or young kids while she recovers since she needs to stay calm, but she would probably be fine with gentle kids and friendly dogs when she is able to resume full activity. I'm in foster care, so please ask to meet me.
