HENNA - Shepherd Mix (Female/Young/40 lbs.)
Good with dogs: Yes
Good with cats: ?
Good with kids: ?
Special needs: Shy, and would like to be adopted with Indya
I was rescued from the pound with my sister Indya. Even though I am shy, I’m the more outgoing of the two of us. My sister and I are very bonded to each other, and it makes us feel safer when we’re together. If you give me a chance to get over my fear, you’ll see how much I love being around people, and how eagerly I soak up the attention. I love to cuddle and sit on your lap, and I love the sound of your voice telling me what a nice girl I am.

Special needs: Shy, and would like to be adopted with Henna
I was rescued from the county pound with my sister Henna. The two of us are very close, and we feel safer when we’re together. Yes, I’m a bit of a fraidy cat sometimes. But I’ll warm up to you pretty quickly once I see that it’s safe. I’ll soak up all the attention you have to give me and I’ll sit quietly on your lap while you pet me. I love to cuddle and give kisses, and go for walks. My sister and I are very sweet and gentle girls who deserve a loving home.

Staffie/Hound Mix (Male/Adult/60 lbs.)
Good with dogs: No
Good with cats: No
Good with kids: No
Special needs: Has lymphangiectasia, so he needs special food and meds
Hopper is a friendly and affectionate boy who wants nothing more than to love and be loved. This poor boy has had a tough life. He was found as a stray wandering down a parkway, and his paws were very sore from his time on the run. Because his paws were painful, he would hop when he walked, which earned him the name Hopper. Hopper is all healed from his days as a stray, and he has adjusted well to life in a home. In fact, his foster mom always says what a good boy he is. Unfortunately, Hopper was diagnosed with a medical disorder called lymphangiectasia. He is fine as long as he is given a special food and medication. While it is unlikely that he will be adopted, we are hoping that someone will offer to foster Hopper when his current foster mom moves away this summer. Hopper is a great dog, and we would hate for him to be returned to the shelter after he has learned how nice it is to be in a loving home. FOHA will cover his medical expenses... all you need to do is give Hopper the TLC that he craves.
NOTE: Check out the Foster a Dog page if you are interested in fostering me.

Pomeranian/Chihuahua Mix (Male/Young/11 lbs.) - COURTESY LISTING
Good with dogs: Yes
Good with cats: Yes
Good with kids: Older
Special needs: None
Howie is approximately 18 months old, rescued from a rural shelter where he was taken in as a stray and his "time was up." He is now looking for his forever home. Howie is a darling, 11 lb, Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix. He is very friendly to everybody---people (probably would be better in a home without small children), other dogs and cats. He is always smiling and just wants to play and be loved and safe. He would be a great "dog park dog." He is neutered and up to date on vaccinations. He loves to cuddle in bed, get belly rubs, give doggie kisses and is perfect both in the car and on leash.
Howie is a courtesy listing and is not at Friends. For more information about adopting this dog, call Sue at 703-938-3202. |

I’m a beautiful girl named Irene. I love going for walks and enjoy being with other dogs. I also love to play chase. Now that would be you chasing me, not the other way around! I’m very smart and very well-behaved. I love attention, but I’m not one to come right out and beg for it. You must be looking for a new friend if you’re reading this, and I’m ready to go when you are.

Plott Hound Mix (Female/Young/40 lbs.)
Good with dogs: Yes
Good with cats: No
Good with kids: Probably
Special needs: None
Janai was given up by her owner when she had a litter of puppies. The owner simply couldn’t take care of her anymore and was overwhelmed by all the new dogs on her property. A lady was contacted who held onto the dogs until they all got rescued. The puppies went to a rescue organization in Richmond, but unfortunately they didn’t have room for the Momma Dog. Friends was contacted and we did have space for her!! Janai loves to play with other dogs. She is a medium-high energy dog who would love to run around in the dog park or just go on some nice hikes. She was a little nervous when she came in, but is coming around nicely! She is not very comfortable riding in the car, but that’s probably because every time she enters it, her world is turned upside down (being surrendered by her owner, going to the vet, going to a shelter, etc). She would probably learn to not be afraid once she gets taken to the dog park! Janai would probably do well with an active family who doesn’t have cats!

I’m a gorgeous girl named Juno. Some of my friends call me Miss Piggy, but I’m not fat, I’m just voluptuous and very sturdy. I’m boodilicious! Actually, it’s just my body type, and they tease me because I love treats so much. They’re just jealous of my style and good looks. I have quite a few canine admirers that gladly escort me on my walks. I just bat my eyelashes and they’re at my beck and call. See, no matter what anyone tells you, I am good with other dogs, just not all of them! I’m going to come right out and tell you that I absolutely do not like cats. And see, small dogs look like cats to me, I can’t help it. So as you can see my dilemma. I’m a very good girl, I’m well behaved, I walk nicely on the leash, and I’m housetrained. You’ll never see me turn down a treat, I would never hurt your feeling by refusing an offer like that! I’ve got brawn, brains, and natural good looks. Now all I need is you.

Rottweiler (Male/Adult) - COURTESY LISTING
Good with dogs: Yes
Good with cats: Yes
Good with kids: ?

Kaiser is a gorgeous 4 year old, purebred Rottweiler. He is used to living in a home with another dog and a cat, but since he hasn't been around kids, he would probably do best going to a home without children. He is housebroken and well-behaved. Kaiser loves playing with his ball (he takes it everywhere), and also enjoys going to the dog park. Kaiser's family could no longer keep him, so Friends offered to help find him a new, forever home. Might it be yours?

Pit Bull (Female/Puppy)
Good with dogs: Yes
Good with cats: No
Good with kids: ?
Special needs: None
Karma is in need of a new home because her owner decided she didn't want this cute little girl anymore when she moved, and left Karma with her mom. The mom wasn't able to take on the care of an 8-month old pup, so Karma was kept tied outside in the backyard. That was not a good situation, especially in the summer heat, so Friends offered to take Karma and find her a new home. Karma is a sweetheart who gets along fine with other dogs, and enjoys outtings to dog parks. She was housebroken when the daughter owned her, but she might need a refresher course since she was kept outside for a while. She is still a growing pup, so she will need lots of exercise, and would benefit from some obedience training.

Australian Cattle Dog Mix (Male/Senior/40 lbs.)
Good with dogs: Yes
Good with cats: ?
Good with kids: Probably
Special needs: None
Karny was found wondering the streets of Rockbridge. A very nice lady took him in and posted flyers all over so his owners could come and claim him. She waited for 1 month, but nobody came. Karny must have been owned, because he was already neutered, and he would LOVE cuddling up in your lap. Unfortunately his owner never showed and he was brought to the shelter. Once there he quickly became the shelter favorite! Rescue organizations were contacted, and luckily FOHA had room for this boy! Karny loves to be with people and dogs! The Good Samaritan that took him in had several dogs and from time to time she had kids over at her house. He did well with everybody. Karny doesn’t appear to be a chewer, loves to cuddle, and rides well in the car. He walks nicely on leash and is low energy. Now he only needs a nice comfy place that he can call home!!

Great Pyrenees Mix (Female/Young/90 lbs.) - COURTESY LISTING
Good with dogs: Yes
Good with cats: ?
Good with kids: Yes
Special needs: Recovering from surgery for bloat
Kayla is a beautiful Great Pyrenees mix who is about 3 years old and weighs about 90 pounds. She is good with other dogs, and is such a sweetheart. Friends would like to rescue her from a county shelter, but we need to find her a foster home for two or three weeks while she finishes recovering from surgery after having bloat. She needs to stay calm during the next few weeks. In addition, she needs to be fed four small meals a day and have the amount of water she drinks restricted. If you think you can give Kayla the care she needs, either as a foster or an adoptive home, please contact us ASAP so we can rescue this wonderful dog!

White Shepherd Mix (Female/Young/60 lbs.)
Good with dogs: Yes
Good with cats: ?
Good with kids: ?
Special needs: None
Kilo came into Franklin County Shelter as a stray. She was absolutely terrified, but slowly started coming out of her shell. She crawled up to one of the volunteers and that was it! They knew that they had to make sure she wasn’t going to get euthanized. Friends was contacted and fortunately we had enough room to bring her in. Kilo is a very sweet girl who seems to get along with other dogs. When she was brought into the shelter, she was absolutely petrified. A Friends volunteer had to carry her out of the car. Now she’s starting to come out of her shell and it will probably take no time until she realizes that she’s surrounded by good people who wish her nothing but good things.

Shepherd/Collie Mix (Male/Adult/44 lbs.)

Friends was contacted to see if we could help out with a hoarding situation. According to the reports, a 68 year old lady had between 70-90 animals in her house and was calling herself a rescue. The heart was in the right place, but obviously it's impossible for anybody to take care of that many animals and have them all in your home. Kirk was one of them. She had Kirk since he was a little puppy and now he's a five year old dog, knowing nothing more than living in a fenced in back yard. He has never been walked on a leash, and the whole world is a little overwhelming for him right now. He's very sweet dog and will bond to whomever decides to adopt him. He would probably do best in a calm home with somebody who's willing to take a little extra time and take him to obedience classes so he can build on his confidence and get more socialized in a controlled setting. He would also do well with another socialized friendly dog. It would help him get out of his shell. SWEET DOG;-)

Corgi Mix (Female/Adult/45 lbs.)
Good with dogs: No
Good with cats: No
Good with kids: Older

Kisses is a fun and affectionate Corgi mix who was dropped off at the county shelter when her family had a new baby. Kisses passed all of her temperament tests except for the “squeeze test,” which is where a person she doesn’t know pinches each of her paws. She didn’t like that very much, so she wasn’t put up for adoption. However, when a caretaker that Kisses was familiar with did the same test, she didn’t have a problem with it. FOHA came to her rescue just in the nick of time! She is a wonderful and loving girl who is past the crazy puppy stage, and is ready to just fit right into her new home. She used to live in a home with other dogs, and even cats, but since arriving at the shelter, she doesn't seem to enjoy the company of other animals as much. Maybe she will change her mind once she gets out of the shelter environment. Kisses is smart and eager to please, and she is sure to put a smile on your face with her cuteness and kisses.

Kitty was brought into the county shelter as an owner surrender and her time quickly ran out. Luckily FOHA had room and here she is. She’s a really nice girl. She walks pretty well on a leash and just loves to be cuddled and petted. She was great in the car and very quiet, even though she did get a little carsick. She would do wonderfully in training class, as she is very eager to please. She loves to play with toys and other dogs and generally loves everyone she meets. She is medium-high energy and would do great in a family.

Border Collie/Newfoundland Mix (Male/Young/50 lbs.)
Good with dogs: Yes
Good with cats: ?
Good with kids: Probably
Special needs: None
Landon was given up by his owner with 3 other dogs (a Momma dog and 2 puppies) to an extremely high kill shelter. At this particular shelter everybody who doesn’t have a stray hold time is euthanized on Thursdays. Luckily there is a wonderful volunteer at this facility who tries to get all the dogs out before this happens. Many dogs were spoken up for except for Landon. The only way FOHA could bring in Landon was via a foster home. Needless to say he went into foster so we could save his life! Landon is a happy-go-lucky pup! He loves to play, chase balls, play with other dogs, cuddle, etc. He’s not afraid of thunderstorm/fireworks and loves everybody. He’s still a young dog and will probably chew a shoe or two if given the chance. At the foster's home he’s left in the kitchen during the day when they are at work. He does great and has no accidents. Landon is an all around wonderful dog with medium energy. He would probably do fine with children as long as they are not too little (he would knock them over, or might get a little mouthy). Landon is a fun loving dog!

Laurice was found on the streets of Franklin County with a litter of puppies. She was absolutely petrified, but soon decided it wasn’t too bad to be at the shelter. There she had a roof over her head, she was being fed at regular times and her puppies were taken care of. As so often happens, the puppies were rescued by an organization, but unfortunately they didn’t have room for Laurice. The volunteers at the shelter started searching for a rescue who could take her. We were contacted and fortunately we had room for this wonderful girl who had already stolen many volunteer hearts ;-) Laurice has done very well at our shelter. She does very well with the staff and seems to do great with the other dogs. She enjoys to cuddle and loves going for walks. All she needs now is a place to call home!

Legacy was brought into a county shelter by her owners. They didn’t have the time to spend with her anymore. She sat there for awhile waiting for them to come back and wondering what she had done wrong. She quickly ran out of time at the shelter, but luckily she caught the eye of one of our volunteers and she was brought to Friends. Legacy is a pretty high-energy dog. She does loves other dogs and very much wants to play. She needs to learn how to walk on a leash a little better, as she was probably never taught. She loves to be petted and play with balls. She is a sweet girl that would excel in training classes and benefit from the socialization. She is probably too much energy for a family with little children.

Lightning came to a county shelter as a stray. He was very skinny, covered in dirt and fleas, and was all work. By all work I mean, he couldn't wait to herd! Lightning is always ready and will do the "typical" Border Collie lowering of the head and body and corral whatever he can! He's obviously a dog that loves to work! Because of his breed and his intensity, whomever would like to adopt him, will need to read up on the breed and be prepared. Lightning is a very smart dog who will need a lot of stimulation. Please be prepared to spend a significant amount of energy and brainpower to full fill this wonderful dogs needs;-)

I’m a uniquely beautiful girl named Lulu. I have tons of love to give, but I’m very selective about my recipients. For some unknown reason, I have no love for other animals. See, I’m an independent girl; I’m a loner, a rebel. Okay, not really a rebel, I just heard that in a movie once. Seriously though, as great as I am, why do you need another pet anyway? I’m already housetrained, and I already know how to sit and shake. I’ve been looking for a job and I think that I’d be the perfect one to protect you for all those scary, unwanted creatures that may creep into your yard. I’m truly a loving and sweet girl. I need a home where I can be free to express myself, but at the same time, have rules and boundaries and a strong leader. We’ll make a great team!
